Matsumoto Castle

Japan, 4-1 Marunouchi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture 390-0873

Matsumoto Castle is designated a National Treasure along with Himeji Castle, Hikone Castle, Inuyama , and Matsue Castle. The castle tower is thought to have been constructed around 1593, making it the oldest castle in Japan with a five-story, six-story tower still standing. It is characterized by its two-tone exterior walls, painted with white plaster and black lacquer. When the mountains behind the castle are covered in snow, the contrast between the black of the castle and the white of the snow makes it even more spectacular.
